Hello and welcome back!
Last week, I was in America, so this seems appropriate. This is also a tune I can find no hint of anywhere, so I'm excited to share it!
It's an unusual tune in terms of accidentals and key signature, and it's laid out strangely as well, with a potentially double-length B part. In the book, the final barline is given an implied repeat, although I'm not sure I buy it. The accidentals are so odd to me that I have actually straightened this one out - usually, I'm very excited to find the odd old tunes that don't sit well with more recent ideas of harmony, but I tried mightily with this one and failed to sit with the discomfort. Perhaps one of you will be stronger.
I am including both the original transcription and the regrettably uniform version I've settled on.
You may notice a few more small changes to the melody - these are what I settled into after having played through the tune many times. I think these changes will make it a more comfortable for others as well as myself. I've also cleared up any confusion about repetition, and set it to be even.
I've also made further changes to the melody when playing it here, but I've done my best to at least play it normally the first time through.
When I've played this as originally written, it's been unsettling, and perhaps this was the intention of the tune's composer - perhaps from the perspective of discouraging others from going there, or conveying to them that things in America are different in odd and unpleasant ways. Perhaps, though, this tune was played by someone who struggled to reliably produce F#s. Perhaps all manner of things.
I have also tried raising the the C to a C#, and found it pleasant enough to hear, especially if the tune is being played a bit slower.
The only other thing I can think to say about this tune is that it lends itself to memory, as the title can be sung over the notes of the first bar.
I hope you enjoy the tune!
